This classic text has a broad coverage, systematic presentation and numerous full colour illustrations and is a worldwide bestselling text, translated into eight languages. It is the essential textbook for trainees and the busy practitioner.

"It is beautifully laid out and has excellent photographs and drawings an excellent text for the intended audience residents in ophthalmology."American Journal of Ophthalmology is difficult to fault this excellent book. It has become a standard text for trainee ophthalmologists."British Journal of Ophthalmology has come close to superseding it in 10 years. If you only ever buy one textbook this is the one."Optician is fair to say that many practitioners use this book as their main reference text in practice. This edition is very professional in its presentation and content, and is more user friendly than its predecessor.

It is a best seller and will remain so.

Superb illustrations which complement a formatted text which is not too detailed but which summarises all the important points related to each topic. This format is excellent for teaching junior ophthalmologists to develop a rational and reproducible approach to each condition standing them in good stead for examinations.

From a content standpoint the book does an excellent job in presenting clinical slides of many ocular pathologies and contains a great deal of information. I am content to say that this book would certainly be on my list!"Reviewers comments and testimonials for the fifth edition. "The first thing that captures the eye about this book, is the beautiful reproduction and classy colour pictures which are generously spread throughout the whole book. Ophthalmology is a very visual disciple and this book respects that. Most face to face pages have at least one or more (often more) colour pictures diagrams or text boxes, so the text is well broken up. Also the text tends to be small paragraphs, lists and bullet points. All this makes the book easy on the eye and a pleasure to read. The target audience is undoubtedly ophthalmologists in training, or senior staff needing a reference text to remind themselves of forgotten areas of knowledge. It is very detailed and covers a lot of areas that are not common, making this a general textbook hard to beat. However it is not too detailed for practitioners of other specialities, especially GPs. Most of the book concentrates on the medical aspects of eye disease rather than the surgical aspects which gives it wider appeal. The detail and depth of coverage is impressive with the rarities getting a reasonable mention whilst the common everyday stuff gets excellent coverage. Even more incredibly most of this is the work of one man, unusual these days where multi-author contributions are very common." GP
